Day 12: How to Increase Engagement

One trick that will increase engagement, deliverability and revenue

No, it’s not a magic button.

I’m sorry to ruin the fun.

But it is just a couple of clicks away and will make or break your entire email marketing revenue if you do it wrong.

Let me explain:

Segmenting.

As boring as it sounds, you will either make so much money you can’t scale any faster or you will be in a drought until you fix this.

What is it?

It’s breaking up your email list into parts determined by specific metrics to filter by variable.

It’s basically like when the teachers at elementary school tell you to get in a line to go down to the cafeteria and you are in 5th grade, in Mrs. Smith’s class:

So you get on Mrs.Smith’s line down to the cafeteria.

But the 4th graders in Mr.Miller’s class are in Mr. Miller’s line because they are in 4th grade in Mr.Miller’s class.

What this looks like for your e-commerce store is:

  • Engaged 30 Day

  • Engaged 60 Day

  • Engaged 90 Day

  • Newsletter

  • AOV

  • Unengaged

  • VIP

  • Etc.

Why is this so important?

Deliverability and Revenue.

If we were to send our email campaigns to our entire newsletter 3-4 times a week, here’s what would happen:

  • We would receive a high unsubscribe rate

  • We would receive high spam reports

  • We would receive a low open rate

  • We would receive an even lower click rate

Now besides just bad metrics why is this so bad?

Because these are all determining factors of whether your list gets your emails or not.

Yikes.

If you just send to your entire list, eventually your open rates will drop below 30, you will be reported for spam, and your list will dwindle resulting in:

Getting put in the spam folder for new or existing recipients.

Even lower open and click rates.

Which leads to a massive decrease in revenue.

This is why deliverability is so important, and why we segment.

We can use our segments like our engaged 30-60-90 days to send our campaigns to generate the most revenue.

Our newsletter and other segments should be sent occasionally or with triggers to make sure they are specifically targeted when we do so.
