An ad was sent out one day to a newspaper reading:
“ Announcing a direct response advertising agency that will guarantee to outpull your best ad. “
This ad and many others made by a single guy, generated millions of dollars, his name:
Gary Bencivenga
Do you want to know what made him so awesome?
Well, nothing.
For 10 years he sucked as a copywriter and was at one point threatened to be fired when his copywriting was underperforming.
He was going to lose his job, and then BOOM, he hit big.
At the time Gary was writing mainly book ads and then asked to write copy to sell the “ Frank Sinatra Music Club “
Now, how was he supposed to do that? A little trick called RESEARCH….
“It took me a while to realize that the best copywriters are the most tenacious researchers. Like miners, they dig, drill, dynamite, and chip until they have carloads of valuable ore. “
As simple as that sounds, it truly will put your copy above another writer because you know more than they do.
And this is exactly how he got his breakthrough in copywriting, from his extensive research on that music club, he made his first major wave in the ad world.
But this is not the only way his copy dominated, let’s take for example one of Gary’s marketing bullets:
Reason-Why Copy
After reading the book Influence by Robert Cialdini I walked away with case studies on the power of “reason”.
The book highlighted a case study where an experimenter set out to cut a line of waiting people, and as you can imagine, the control was doing so without a reason, and the variable was with one.
The results: When the person gave a reason, no matter how insignificant…
Boom! Double the number of people let the experimenter cut the line.
“Ask if you are giving reasons why in each of these three areas:
1. Compelling reason(s) why your product is superior to other solutions your prospects might choose, including doing nothing.
2. Compelling reason(s) to believe that what you say is true.
3. Compelling reason(s) to seize the opportunity today.”
Can you identify what makes this a reason-why copy?
A great example of ‘reason-why’ copy is in this Wendy’s ad above ⬆️
Tells customers that their fries dont arch, making them better
They show how their new fries are preferred 2 to 1
The Wendy’s fries are “new” so you need to seize the opportunity
The Two Most Powerful Words in Advertising
Yeah, sure.
Does it sound weird? Because at first I was confused too, but let me show you an example.
Which ad do you think performed better:
If you’ve got 20 minutes a month, I guarantee to work a financial miracle in your life.
or
The Millionaire Maker
When you read these headlines, which one makes you go “ Yeah, sure “.
The second one, “ The Millionaire Maker “ because you can almost guarantee that whatever that business is selling, probably won’t make you a millionaire.
We can use this to framework our ad headlines to be the opposite.
The whole point is to make sure that the proof will equal the claim, which makes the headline so much more appealing.
So which performed better?
If you’ve got 20 minutes a month, I guarantee to work a financial miracle in your life.
This ad won by a longshot!
Yeah, sure.
Now I want a Coke from Mcdonalds...
Now Gary did not create these ads, but the legend himself created the foundation.
Let me show you the 6-word foundation Gary set for reviewing your copy for killer results…
The 6-Word Formula that Kills the Market
Who are you advertising to?
What does your product do for them?
Why is it superior to alternative products?
How can you prove your case?
Where should you advertise to reach prime prospects?
When is the best time to reach them?
If you run your ad copy through this formula and genuinely answer all of these questions, you will have a killer.
Gary used this strategy for his famous sales letters, and they generated millions for him and his clients. This here is a top performer:
What took Gary from below average to be known as one of the world’s best copywriters, was using these strategies, and producing 10x more than his competitors.
Are you performing? Have your ads been hitting?
Research, proof, and targeting.
Now use Gary’s strategies, and produce at least 10 ads for every ad campaign you want to run.
