Finding out new parts to the job

Creative Directing.

That’s something I can’t add to my resume yet but I feel like I have a good handle on it.

When you get brought onto a project where your job title isn’t specified:

You start picking up a variety of skills.

As for me, I’ve started working higher than my pay grade.

I’ve recently hired a web developer for the in-house team, and now am creative directing a new project.

If you told me I would be in charge of hiring someone last year, I’d just laugh and get back to playing video games.

But that’s not what we’re doing anymore.

Now I have the privilege to learn an adjacent skillset to my marketing…..

And that comes with some challenges.

When your main job isn’t designer, but you're told to creatively direct a web developer/designer things get tricky.

So currently I am in the process of taking roles like:

  • Manager

  • Creative Director

  • Content Provider

  • Communicator

Between many facets.

The best part is:

I haven’t been paid yet.

Why are you doing this?

Let me explain this using a movie metaphor:

Imagine you just discovered your love for cinematography and you’ve spent the last year self-learning.

And one day a friend tells you that his childhood best friend is running the set of a new Hallmark movie.

He offers to introduce you to his childhood best friend.

You pitch yourself, and he brings you aboard.

Whether you love Hallmark or you hate them, everyone knows the name.

Even being on set with these people feels like a dream come true because the experience you gain from working at such a high level is worth a lot of money.

People pay colleges thousands of dollars to get into an internship program that potentially lets them get close.

But here you are on for free, and maybe if you do a good enough job you land yourself one.

That’s my scenario, and the experience I gain will position me to build my business.
