- What are you worth?
What are you worth?
Let's break it down
Have you ever wondered what your skillset is worth?
Do you have a skill set that no matter where you are in the world, all you need is a wifi connection and you’ll survive?
Well I’m working on it, and I’ll tell you it would feel a whole lot better if I was confident I could.
So I spend every day learning and constantly working on my skillset.
I had this idea pop into my head when my client asked how much I thought I deserved to be paid.
It went something like this:
Client: “ Since I brought you on the project you’ve been killing it, I definitely want to keep you around so what do you think you deserve? “
Me: “ Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh “
Yes, this happened.
And I’m still trying to think of a way you could put value on skill.
Until I figured this out:
Under Value - Over Deliver
The idea is to undercharge, or undervalue yourself and then over-deliver.
This is powerful when it comes to client relationships.
Not to contrast yesterday’s email about faking it until you make it, you should do that to get on the project.
But once you're there, you do everything you said you would and more.
Earning the opportunity is the hardest part, we can all agree.
So when you get the chance, you should be a machine.
Do any and everything the client asks, and one up them with creativity, work ethic, and just repetitions.
You have an advantage when you're starting out:
You start with 1 client
Which means you spend all your energy on their project
Which means you can put in the highest repetition/iterations
Resulting in the highest quality and effort output
You should be the hardest worker, and your client should see that clear as day.
When they look at their team, you should be the one that is doing the most work but is currently costing them nothing in payroll.
That’s how you stand out.
That’s how you get offered a contract to be a part of the team.
And from there you work your way up.
